RSD won the inaugural 10km race at the Outback Paddle Festival on 21 September 2019 and won $800.00. They all very much enjoyed the hospitality and welcome shown to them by Longreach and were very happy to donate their winnings to support a local charity, the Outback Mind Warriors.
If you go on to Facebook and search for Outback Mind Warriors, it will be connected to Walk 4 Weggert, which was the initial fund raiser that was started after Kris Weggert committed suicide a few months back. His girlfriend, Paris Cox, started this community initiative and was wanting to establish a support group for people, within and across the Longreach region, who are suffering with mental health issues or families that are struggling with the residual issues associated with losing a loved one to suicide.
Outback Mind Warriors is in its infantile stages, but has the full support of Longreach Council and community networks so all donations go to those in need. As it only has volunteers, there is no administration fees swallowing up the funds donated. 100 % of the monies raised goes to those in need.
On the Walk 4 Weggert Facebook page it details that over $8,000 was raised with the recent event 'Walk for Weggert' that will be held annually.
Further information is on the Longreach and Surrounding Area’s Community Notice Board on Facebook. Paris Cox has posted an explanation about the goals she has for Outback Mind Warriors and openly states where and what is happening with the funds.
All monies are kept in trust with the Longreach Council, as it is not an organisation, but an association that is affiliated with other suicide prevention groups in the region ( psychologists, suicide prevention group, GPs, RFDS, Ambulance and Police).
Well done, RSD, it is a worthy cause!!!
